Over 342,000 merchants use the TeleCheck system. Merchants reduce their risk by accepting checks from customers about whom the TeleCheck system has positive information (or at least no negative information).

If you are a consumer whose check was declined by a TeleCheck merchant you can improve your chances of having your check accepted in the future.

Every transaction that is declined by a TeleCheck merchant is given a "record number". The merchant should provide you with a courtesy card with this seven-digit record number.

You can help TeleCheck create a positive file about you. Provide the record number, your drivers license number, the banking numbers printed on your check, and your Social Security number to TeleCheck International.

Credit Report Scores - Computing Then

• Total outstanding debt (Good: non-mortgage loan payments less than 5% of gross income)
• Types of debt (Good: mortgage, car loans, Bad: high credit card debt)
• Length of credit history (Good: 3 or more years of on time payments)
• Credit inqueries (Bad: many rejected applications)

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) prohibits certain factors from being used in determining your credit report score:

• Personal details such as sex, marital status, age, race, national origin, or because you receive public assistance income
• Sources of income such as regular alimony, child support, or separate maintenance payments

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act provides actions for you to take if suspect unauthorized factors are being used to deny you credit.
